Free Trees to Celebrate Arbor Day!

For 15 consecutive years, the New Jersey Tree Foundation offered free two-year-old trees (1’ – 2’ tall) to celebrate Arbor Day occurring on the last Friday in April. A variety of evergreen and deciduous trees were available. Schools, local governments, tree groups, non-profit organizations, scout groups, and any volunteer organization were eligible to apply for the free trees. New groups applying for trees were required to attend one training session which covered tree planting and maintenance. All planting occurred on public lands, was done by volunteers, and the trees were maintained for at least two years.

The trees were used in many ways to beautify neighborhoods. They were planted in vacant lots to create an urban forest, planted as a windbreak for community gardens or schools, planted in nurseries, or planted randomly throughout a park or cemetery. Through the Celebrate Arbor Day Program, the NJ Tree Foundation helped thousands of groups plant over 225,000 tree saplings.
